Integrated Safety, the practical way forward

With the introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, automotive safety engineers were challenged to move into active safety territory. Over the past years, several stand alone Advanced Driver Assistance Systems have already proven their value in the market. The next steps forward in vehicle safety are following from the focus shift towards the design of integrated safety systems.

An integrated safety system operates in all phases of a potential collision event, including collision avoidance, collision mitigation and injury mitigation. Within a truly integrated vehicle safety system, stand-alone safety and driver assistance systems will be functioning in a single optimized vehicle safety design.

From the perspective of occupant passive safety, a shift towards an integrated safety design means that restraint systems can be activated before time of impact. Furthermore their response can be fine-tuned to actual accident conditions, using information from the pre-crash phase. One of the challenges here is to optimize and validate restraint systems to perform robustly over a wide range of real world scenarios.

This afternoon the focus will be on how to design and optimize integrated vehicle safety systems, what type of tools are needed in the process and how to validate these systems.
